Last Light on Helen

from $80.00

What I See

Mount St. Helens rises above a bank of clouds, its open crater held in the shadow of its own western edge while warm late light brushes the eastern slope and drifting vapor. Seen from above, the volcano is compressed into a broad horizontal field of charcoal, rose, and muted gray.

What I Like About It

I am drawn to the imbalance between the mountain's mass and the softness around it. The light reaches only part of the crater, so the frame feels less like a complete portrait than a brief disclosure before the summit returns to shadow.
